In The Sims 4, winning the lottery is the quickest and easiest way of becoming a millionaire without cheats. This was introduced in the Sims 4: Seasons expansion in 2018 and has provided Sims with the chance of a huge windfall ever since.
The winnings from the lottery will be a mammoth one million Simoleons, which is more than enough to secure a lavish lifestyle for your Sims. Everyone wants to be a lottery winner, and you’ll definitely need a bit of good fortune. However, there are some things to bear in mind that can help you snag the cash.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to win the lottery in the Sims, with some extra tips to get your hands on the money.
How to win the lottery in the Sims 4
The lottery is not always available, but pops up as a surprise holiday in the calendar every so often.
As long as your Sim is a young adult or older, they can buy a ticket with a phone or computer for 100 Simoleons. Click on either during the day in question and select ‘Buy Lottery Ticket’
After a ticket is bought, it’s simply a waiting game until 10AM the following day, when the winner will be announced.
You will have slim odds of victory and cannot guarantee a win. Instead, you must hope lady luck is on your side when the results come in.
There are only two things you can really do to boost your chances. Neither of these will make it particularly likely you’ll win, but it’s worth doing anyway:
- Play the lottery every single time it is available
- Make sure every Sim in the household enters the lottery
You can only enter the lottery once per Sim, but multiple Sims per household can buy a ticket. All other Sims outside the household will automatically enter, provided they are old enough. This includes homeless people and animals, though it’s unclear whether this is intentional. Mayor Whiskers actually seems to win a disproportionate amount of times.
Win, and you’ll get a million Simoleons added to your funds. You will also get a Dazed moodlet due to your Sim being so shocked at winning.
Even if you don’t win. There are still some other ways of getting your hands on the money…
Marry the lottery winner
The good news is that the winner of the lottery is always announced, so you’ll know who is now flush with cash.
Take note of who it is and start sparking up a romance that can lead to more. If you marry them and move in together, you’ll get access to all of the money!
If you’re unsure about who or where they are, go into ‘Manage Worlds’ in the menu and select the tab ‘Other Households’. You’ll be able to find the family based on surname and it will tell you which World they currently reside in. It will also show you their funds, confirming you are indeed pursuing the right person.
You never know – perhaps you and your Sim will genuinely come to love the winner for the person they are. But if not, you can force them to move out and keep the money. If anyone calls you a gold digger, you’ll have plenty of cash to buy something and make yourself feel better.
Another, even more immoral option is to ensure they have an “accident” after moving in. Is a million Simoleons enough to buy a conscience?
Move in with the lottery winner
If you aren’t feeling a romantic spark with the winning Sim, there’s another option to get hold of the money.
You can also befriend the winner for a completely platonic relationship. Once you are close enough, you can ask them to move in. If they agree, they will bring along all of their winnings. This is also an option if your Sim is already married.
The same principle as marriage will apply. Welcome them with open arms until you are sufficiently rich, at which point you can get rid of them.
Is it even worth entering the lottery in the Sims 4?
It costs 100 Simoleons to enter, and the prize is 1,000,000 Simoleons. Therefore, your potential winnings will be 10,000 times bigger than your stake.
The exact odds of winning are difficult to determine and seems to depend on the number of NPCs, but they are definitely better than 1 in 10,000.
From a statistical point of view, you should enter the lottery every time you possibly can. You’ll eventually scoop the big prize one day and it will all be worth it.
Can you cheat to win the lottery in the Sims 4?
There is no cheat that actually wins you the lottery, but it’ll be no surprise to know there is a cheat that can make you so rich that you won’t need it.
The best cheat to get money is the Motherlode cheat, which will gain you 50,000 Simoleons every time you do it. You can actually do this as many times as you want, and it won’t take long to easily amass money beyond your Sims’ wildest dreams.
To perform the Motherlode cheat, follow these instructions depending on the platform:
PC: Press Ctrl, Shift and C to open the Cheat Console, then type “motherlode”
Mac: Press Command, Shift and C to open the Cheat Console, then type “motherlode”
Xbox/Playstation: Hold all shoulder buttons together to open the Cheat Console, then type “motherlode”
There is a less extreme option if you just want a little pocket money. Instead of “motherlode”, follow the same instructions but type “rosebud” or “kaching” to gain 1,000 Simoleons instead.
Cheating isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s actively encouraged by EA. It’s also probably a better option than luring a Sim into your home and disposing of them. Each to their own.
