Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – Ice Stone location guide

glaceon evolution

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet continue the tradition of requiring certain evolution items to acquire some of the best pokemon in the game. If you are looking to fill out your Pokedex, there are many different stones and items you will have to hunt down in the Paldea region. A handful of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Ice type Pokemon require an Ice Stone, which is a relatively rare item. Unfortunately, you’ll need a few of them to complete your Pokemon collection.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Ice Stones in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, with the Ice Stone locations, evolutions and some tips to help you on your way.

What is the Ice Stone used for in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

The Ice Stone is an evolution item in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, meaning you will require these items to instigate certain pokemon evolutions.

In the case of Ice Stones, there are three specific evolutions where an Ice Stone is required:

  • Cetoddle evolves into Cetitan
  • Crabrawler evolves into Crabominable
  • Eevee evolves into Glaceon

As you may have guessed, all of these pokemon are Ice Type, with Crabominable also being a Fighting type.

Obviously Eevee is one of the most popular pokemon out there, and has many different evolutions. The Ice Stone is therefore critical if you are looking for the full repertoire of Eevee types.

Can you buy Ice Stones in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

Unfortunately, no. There aren’t any shops that sell Ice Stones.

This makes the Ice Stone one of the rarest items in the game, and your only options to acquire them using the methods below.

auction house ice stone

Ice Stone location in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

There are currently many known ways to acquire an Ice Stone.

Auction House in Porto Marinada

You can only access the Auction House after defeating Open Sky Titan in West Province (Area One) and swimming up the East Province River.

Once you have reached the top half of the map, you will find a town called Porto Marinada which has an Auction House. Note that you can only participate in auctions after you have conquered the Water Gym in Cascarrafa by beating the leader Kofu. It’s possible to reach the Auction House before you have done this, so make sure it’s cleared before you give this a try.

When you have unlocked the auctions, you will be able to make bids for several random items that change daily. Many of the evolution items will appear here, including the Ice Stone. As you run past the stalls, you’ll see the dialogue boxes telling you which items are currently up for auction.

However, since it’s completely random there is no guarantee an Ice Stone will appear anytime soon. If an Ice Stone is not mentioned, you’ll have to wait for another real-life day and approach the stalls again (unless you change your Switch settings, discussed later).

Found on Glaseado Mountain

By far the most reliable (and cost-effective) way to obtain Ice Stones is to find them on Glaseado Mountain.

This is found in the snowy region in the Northern part of Paldea. They are simply lying on the side of the mountain, denoted by shiny icons that can be picked up when you approach them.

Don’t get too excited when you see a shiny icon – there are plenty of other items found in the exact same way, and the Ice Stones are relatively rare. You’re actually more likely to get something like a Pokeball or a healing item.

All you can really do is keep running around the mountain, keep your eyes peeled and pick up everything you find until you stumble upon an Ice Stone. This is the only place they respawn periodically.

Near Dalizapa Passage Pokemon Center

A non-random guaranteed Ice Stone is north of the Dalizapa Passage Pokemon Center.

Head north to reach a cave area that you must ascend to find a red Pokeball on the floor, which contains an Ice Stone.

This Ice Stone is fairly easy to obtain if your mount can climb or high jump, but even if they don’t have these abilities it is possible to reach the Ice Stone without them. You will have to simply be more precise with your jump to get to the right spot, going right up to the foot of the ledge.

Snow Slope Run Minigame

There is also a one-time Ice Stone reward for clearing the Blizzard course in Snow Slope Run.

This is another instance where the Ice Stone is not random, and is actually guaranteed.

First, you must clear Glaseado’s Gym Battle against Grusha to unlock the minigame, and you then have to complete the Powder Snow course to unlock the Blizzard course. Complete this, and another Ice Stone will be yours!

Tips for using the Ice Stone

Here is some final advice relating to the Ice Stone in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Use it quickly on Eevee

If you want to use the Ice Stone on Eevee, it’s best to use it sooner rather than later. If you level up Eevee, it can evolve without the use of any evolution item, effectively locking out the Ice Stone unless you catch another one.

The conditions where this can happen are actually quite complicated and depend on Eevee’s happiness level. If Eevee’s happiness reaches 160+ and you level Eevee up, it will evolve (note that there is not a set level that must be reached). The specific evolution depends on the time of day and whether they know Fairy moves.

Your best bet is therefore to avoid this possibility by using the Ice Stone quickly before any accidental evolutions trigger.

Go to the Auction House first

If you have already obtained the guaranteed Ice Stones, then it’s down to the Auction House and Glaseado Mountain for any further Ice evolutions. Depending on how much cash you’ve got, it’s definitely worth checking out the Auction House before you start hunting around for Ice Stones, as they are not particularly common at Glaseado Mountain. To save time, I would simply suggest checking the first auction and if it does appear, heading off to find them on Glaseado Mountain.

There is only one auction per day based on real-life time, but another option here is to change your Nintendo Switch settings to move the date forwards and try again. Go to System Settings, then System, then Date and Time to alter the hardware date.

This may seem a lot of hassle but once you have got used to jumping quickly in and out of the menus, it won’t take too long to guarantee the appearance of an Ice Stone. It will still cost more than finding them in the wild, but it may end up quicker if you have the spare cash.

There we have it. That’s our Ice Stone guide to provide the Ice Stone location and Ice Stone evolutions for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The only thing left to do is find these Ice Stones and evolve your Pokemon as required. Happy hunting!
