Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – How to get Quick Balls

pokemon scarlet violet quick balls

Quick Balls are a type of Poke Ball that can greatly enhance the odds of catching Pokemon. They cannot be obtained immediately in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but when available Quick Balls are definitely one of the best out there.

Not only do Quick Balls save you valuable time, but they also prevent the nerve-jangling process of trying to lower a wild Pokemon’s health without accidentally knocking them out. They were first introduced in Generation IV and are included within Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Since Quick Balls seem to now be a mainstay of the Pokemon series, we’ve got the full lowdown below.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to get Quick Balls in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

How do Quick Balls work in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

Quick Balls are an incredibly useful resource in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. They are a form of Poke Ball that has a better chance of catching a Pokemon when thrown early in the battle.

If you throw a Quick Ball during the first turn of a battle, it will have five times the probability of catching the Pokemon compared to a standard Poke Ball. After the first turn, this probability reverts back to the same probability as a standard Poke Ball.

Therefore you should never waste a Quick Ball by throwing it after your first turn, unless you are out of regular Poke Balls and get desperate.

where to buy quick balls

Where to buy Quick balls in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Quick Balls can be purchased for ₽1,000 from any Poke Mart, but only after beating any 6 gyms. They are also available from Delibird Presents for ₽1,000 but also require you to beat 6 gyms before they are unlocked.

Delibird Presents have stores that can be found in Cascarrafa, Levincia and Mesagoza. If you have an excess of LP, you can buy Quick Balls with them instead.

Quick Balls are pretty overpowered, which is presumably why they aren’t readily unavailable until fairly late in the game. If you are aiming to beat the gyms as quickly as possible, then Glaseado and Alfornada are the highest-level gyms, so you should clear the rest of them first.

Where to get Quick Balls without beating 6 Gyms

There are numerous other ways of getting Quick Balls, but unfortunately none of them will provide a huge stock compared to a bulk purchase at a store.

Found in the Wild

Quick Balls are one of many, many items that are found in the wild. These aren’t in fixed locations but can found as random loot denoted by the golden shiny icons on the floor.

It’s always nice to find a free Quick Ball lying around but these don’t seem to have any set regions where they can be farmed in large numbers. Simply keep picking up any stray items as you explore and eventually you will build up a few Quick Balls.

Won at Porto Marinada Auction House

Quick Balls will be occasionally available at Porto Marinada Auction House, which can be unlocked without clearing six gyms. In fact, you will only need to beat the Water gym in Cascarrafa to gain access to the auctions.

After you have done this, walk through the stalls and you will be able to tell from the speech bubbles whether Quick Balls are going up for auction. If Quick Balls are not available, you can change the time in the settings of your Nintendo Switch console to speed it along and reset the available items. Go to System Settings, then System, then Date and Time to alter the hardware date. Put it forward two hours and you should find the all items up for auction have been reset.

This isn’t exactly a perfect method either, as it may take numerous attempts and will also set you back some money.

Rewarded for catching 120 Pokemon

Once you catch 120 different Pokemon, you will trigger a Pokedex Milestone that will reward you with some Quick Balls.

Enter the menu and view your Pokedex Milestones, where you will be prompted to press X to receive a reward for every 10 Pokemon you catch. On 120 Pokemon, you will receive 10 Quick Balls.

There are various different Poke Balls and other rewards along the way, but this is the only time you will receive Quick Balls.

Rewarded for catching 200 Pokemon

Another similar reward, completely separate to the Pokedex comes from your homeroom teacher Jacq.

Once you have caught 200 different Pokemon, go and speak to him in the Biology Lab in the Academy where he will reward you with 20 Quick Balls.

Jacq doesn’t give you rewards as regularly as the Pokedex, but that’s still a solid stock of Quick Balls which are well worth getting for free.

how to use quick balls

How to use Quick Balls effectively in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Since Quick Balls provide benefit on the first turn, the most effective way to use them on any wild Pokemon is to do the following:

  • Enter a battle with a wild Pokemon
  • Throw a Quick Ball on your first turn
  • If it fails, escape the battle – the Pokemon will not disappear from the field
  • Battle them again and throw another Quick Ball on your first turn
  • Repeat the above steps until you catch the Pokemon

This way, even against strong Pokemon, you’ll never be open to any risk of being knocked out or losing the Pokemon. As long as you have a solid stock of Quick Balls, you will eventually catch it (and it probably won’t take that many attempts). If you haven’t got a big supply and get really desperate, then you can even save scum for rapid repeat attempts.

Honestly, it does appear the Pokemon community is divided on Quick Balls, with debate ongoing for years about whether their increased catch odds is a game-breaking feature. On the other hand, catching ’em all is no mean feat so we don’t blame anyone for using Quick Balls!
