Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – How to get more boxes

pokemon how many boxes

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet contains a whopping 400 Pokemon to catch, but only 6 can fit into your team at any one time. Therefore it’s essential to use your Pokemon storage boxes to keep your spare Pokemon waiting in the wings to be called upon when needed.

The initial box count of 8 Pokemon storage boxes may seem insufficient for any Pokemon master aiming to catch ‘em all, but thankfully there’s a simple way to hugely increase your capacity. By doing so, you should be able to store all the Pokemon you catch during your adventure… within reason.

Our Pokemon Scarlet and Violet boxes guide will explain the method to increase your storage boxes, as well as some of the further tips that will help you on your journey through Paldea.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to get more boxes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

How to get more boxes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

The starting box capacity is just 8 boxes, but this can easily be increased by following these instructions:

  • Select ‘Boxes’ from the Main Menu
  • Put at least one Pokemon in each of the 8 boxes (you do not need to fill the boxes)
  • Exit the Boxes menu and re-enter it
  • You will now automatically have 16 Pokemon Storage boxes
  • Put at least one Pokemon in each of the 16 boxes
  • Exit the Boxes menu and re-enter it
  • You will now automatically have 32 Pokemon Storage boxes!

Each box can actually hold 30 Pokemon, but don’t worry about filling these up since one Pokemon per box will do the trick. Therefore, to utilise this method to maximise your capacity you must have at least 16 spare Pokemon to place in the boxes, so you can put one into each box. Over the course of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet this should be achieved easily.

It’s a little strange that the maximum number of boxes isn’t available from the start, but if you know what to do, it is a simple process to get more boxes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

What is the maximum number of storage boxes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

If you keep repeating the above trick, there is maximum of 32 storage boxes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Once you reach this number, the trick will stop working and no more boxes can be obtained. Thankfully, this still allows a huge number of Pokemon to be stored at one time.

What is the maximum number of Pokemon you can hold in your boxes?

There is a maximum of 32 boxes, and a maximum of 30 Pokemon per box.

Therefore the maximum number of Pokemon you can store in your boxes is 960 Pokemon.

If you include the 6 Pokemon in your current fighting team, that’s a total of 966 Pokemon you can have at a time.

With 400 Pokemon available in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Pokedex, it’s therefore easily possible to have one of each Pokemon for a living Pokedex. You’ve even got enough for two of each if you really want them, such as a standard and shiny version.

What if I want to store even more Pokemon?

If even the maximum of 960-odd Pokemon doesn’t fulfil the needs of serial Pokemon collectors, then cloud-based storage via Pokemon Home will be your next option. Live as of Spring 2023, Nintendo have confirmed Pokemon Scarlet and Violet compatibility as follows:

After you’ve linked either title to Pokémon HOME, you’ll be able to transfer Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet to Pokémon HOME and bring select Pokémon from past games to the Paldea region.

Though this doesn’t allow every single Pokemon to enter Paldea from other generations, it’s still a cool prospect to introduce foreign Pokemon to the region. This also allows a greater store of Pokemon from Scarlet and Violet.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has 293 existing Pokemon from other games, and 107 brand-new Pokemon to collect. A few of these are Paldean variants of existing Pokemon, but we’re still counting them.

What should you use your boxes for?

The most obvious use for boxes is simply to store Pokemon you want to keep, but don’t want in your team at the time.

However, boxes can also be used to organise your Pokemon according to your needs. For instance, you can keep certain categories of Pokemon grouped together for easier access without the need to hunt down the ones you want in your many boxes.

You could assign boxes for each different type, like keeping all of your Electric types in the same box and all of your Fire types in another one. Usually this would require multiple boxes for each type, but it’s better than mixing them up everywhere.

Alternatively, you can keep different teams together. Certain Pokemon teams may compliment each other well in certain scenarios, and having them grouped in different boxes makes it much easier to swap everyone in and out when you need a change of strategy.

Whatever categories you want to organise, hopefully the total of 32 different boxes will be enough to split them out as required.

Do you have to keep all of your Pokemon to complete the Pokedex?

On the subject of boxes, the temptation can be to hoard all of your Pokemon for a rainy day.

However, it’s worth remembering you do not need to keep your Pokemon for it to count towards your Pokedex completion. As long as you had it at some point, it will be registered in your Pokedex for the rest of the game.

If room is starting to get tight within your boxes, you can release some of your unused Pokemon without it affecting your quest to catch ‘em all and complete the Pokedex. Completing the Pokedex is no mean feat itself, since Paldea has a grand total of 400 different Pokemon!

That’s how to get more Pokemon Storage boxes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. This should enable you to store a huge number of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet for your adventures in Paldea. For more Pokemon content, check out the articles below.
