Minecraft – Where to find Brown Mushrooms

minecraft where to find brown mushrooms

Brown Mushrooms have various different uses in Minecraft, ranging from purely cosmetic to seriously useful. One the one hand, they can nicely decorate a home with their shimmering light, and on the other they can be used to create crucial ingredients for your potions. To reap the benefits, you’ll need to know where to find Brown Mushrooms in Minecraft.

Like many objects, Brown Mushrooms can have a habit of disappearing when you need them the most. Nonetheless, they should never be too far away and there are some straightforward ways of getting them.

Here’s everything you need to know about Brown Mushrooms in Minecraft, including where to find Brown Mushrooms and how to use them.

Where to find Brown Mushrooms in Minecraft

When you come across mushrooms, they will either be red or brown. Brown Mushrooms are actually more common, and they can easily be mined to obtain 2 mushrooms per block. These are the main places to find Brown Mushrooms.

Dark areas

Mushrooms are commonly found in places with light level below 12. This covers just about anything from forests to caves. Swamps and old growth taiga biomes can also spawn lots of Brown Mushrooms.

Search every tree in dark forests, and look around the bushes and shaded areas. Basically anywhere outside that is wet and dark has a solid chance of some Mushrooms being naturally generated.

Mushroom Fields biomes

If you’re looking for Mushrooms, the best biome by far is a mushroom fields biome. These are rare, and appear as islands surrounded by deep ocean. This makes them awkward to find and reach, but if you do come across one you’ll soon have all the Brown Mushrooms you could want.

These biomes also have a tendency to spawn close to each other, giving you even more opportunities for Brown Mushrooms.

The Nether

The Nether is a great place to find Mushrooms. Since the whole area is dark enough for Mushrooms, you will usually not have to look for very long before you find some Brown Mushrooms.

The Nether comes with its own dangers, but it’s probably the best place other than a mushroom fields biome to find lots of Brown Mushrooms in a short space of time. Of course, you’ll need to construct a Nether Portal to reach the Nether so this may be off-limits for players during the early phases of the game.

brown mooshroom

Shear Brown Mooshrooms

This one is only relevant if you find a mushroom fields biome, because Mooshrooms will only spawn here. The problem is that the vast majority of Mooshroom mobs are red. They have a tiny chance to spawn as Brown Mooshrooms, or Red Mooshrooms can become Brown Mooshrooms if they are struck by lightning. Unfortunately, this is quite unlikely as well unless you use a Trident during a thunderstorm to purposely smite them.

If you happen to bump into these passive mobs on your travels, you can actually grab the Mushrooms off their back. The Mushrooms you obtain will correspond to the colour, so you’ll never get Brown Mushrooms from a red mob.

Shearing a Brown Mooshroom will yield 5 Brown Mushrooms and will also turn them into normal cow.

Trade with a wandering trader

Mushrooms can sometimes be obtained from wandering traders for just one emerald. These aren’t always going to be available, as wandering traders generally offer a wide variety of different items.

However, it’s always worth checking the wares of a wandering trader if you are searching for Brown Mushrooms.

What can you use Brown Mushrooms for in Minecraft?

There are actually quite a few different uses for Brown Mushrooms. You’ll no doubt be aware of some, but others may surprise you.

Crafting

The main use of Brown Mushrooms is for crafting. In particular, it is used to make a Fermented Spider Eye, which is necessary for various different potions. Overall, the things that can be made with Brown Mushrooms are:

  • Fermented Spider Eye – Brown Mushroom, Sugar and Spider Eye
  • Mushroom Stew – Brown Mushroom, Red Mushroom and Bowl
  • Rabbit Stew – Any Mushroom, Cooked Rabbit, Carrot, Baked Potato and Bowl
  • Suspicious Stew – Brown Mushroom, Red Mushroom, any Flower and Bowl

The Mushroom Stew is a decent food, restoring 6 hunger and 7.2 hunger saturation. The Rabbit Stew is even better, replenishing 10 hunger and 12 hunger saturation.

Meanwhile, the Fermented Spider Eye is required for a Potion of Weakness, Potion of Invisibility, Potion of Slowness and a Potion of Harming.

Decoration

Brown mushrooms can be used as decorations. They can be planted in flower pots, but if you keep them outside the pots they actually emit a small light. This will not happen if you put them in flower pots, and Red Mushrooms do not emit the light, arguably making Brown Mushrooms a little more valuable.

Mushroom Farm

Once you have Brown Mushrooms, it’s possible to duplicate them to keep a steady supply for your food dishes and potion ingredients.

Mushrooms are actually one of the easiest things to farm. All you need to do is place them on a block where the light level is lower than 12. As long as the light level does not get higher than this, the mushrooms will grow of their own accord. There is no need to give them any water and they can grow in small spaces.

The only problem is that dark areas can lure hostile mobs, and the best counter to this are soul torches that will prevent mobs without being too bright for your mushrooms.

If you use a bone meal on a normal Brown Mushroom, it will eventually grow into a Huge Mushroom (provided there is enough room). This will give the opportunities to harvest potentially dozens of Brown Mushrooms.

With a modest mushroom farm and some bone meals, you can keep producing Brown Mushrooms which can be turned into Huge Mushrooms. Before long, you can easily get your hands on a huge supply of Brown Mushrooms.
