God of War Ragnarok – How to get to Mist Fields in Niflheim

The Mist Fields in Niflheim is an area in God of War Ragnarok that is tantalisingly out of reach as you mop up your sidequests and objectives towards the end of the game.

As you’ll see from the completion list, there is a Berserker Gravestone here which must be cleared in order to tackle the Berserker King and eliminate these challenging enemies altogether. There’s also another quest that cannot be completed without backtracking to the Mist Fields.

God of War Ragnarok doesn’t spell out the route back to Mist Fields, so we’ve got everything you need to know below.

Here’s how to get to Mist Fields in God of War Ragnarok.

Can you get back to Mist Fields?

It is impossible to get to Mist Fields in Niflheim until you have completed the main quest of God of War Ragnarok.

Obviously this excludes the mandatory story section involving Atreus and Thor, but during this gameplay segment you will not be able to trigger the Berserker Gravestone.

As such, you will simply need to complete the main story first, and can ignore Mist Fields until you have done so. When the credits roll, you can finally turn your attention to this area.

How to get to Mist Fields in God of War Ragnarok

Once you have completed the main quest, some new Mystic Gateways can be unlocked, including the one to Mist Fields in Niflheim.

To get to Mist Fields, follow these steps:

  • Go to Sindri’s House via a Mystic Gateway after beating the main quest
  • Speak to Ratatoskr who will give you a pouch of Yggdrasil Seeds, unlocking a series of new Mystic Gateways in various realms
  • Enter a Mystic Gateway and select Niflheim, which will have a new Mystic Gateway available
  • Scroll under the Raven Tree gateway to see an Undiscovered Gateway which will lead to Mist Fields
  • Hold X to Unlock Gateway, allowing you to travel there
  • Select the Mist Fields Mystic Gateway and you can travel there as normal via Yggdrasil

Mist Fields is not a particularly big area, and you will be able to explore it quickly to find everything there. A few weak enemies are lurking around, but nothing that should trouble you at this point.

You cannot get back to the Frozen Caverns and other areas you cleared earlier with Thor, but there is nothing important down there anyway.

What is in the Mist Fields?

There are a couple of things in Mist Fields required if you are aiming to achieve 100% completion in God of War Ragnarok.

  • Berserker Gravestone for Skjothendi the Unerring
  • A Frostfinger Flower, which is required to complete the Nine Realms in Bloom quest

Neither of these things can be tackled when you visit with Thor, so they are only possible in the post-game.

To find the Frostfinger, search in the corner near the Mystic Gateway. It’s on the left-hand side, by the swords, frozen corpses and statues just after you exit the Gateway. You can’t really miss it, as Kratos will also draw your attention to it with some dialogue when you are close.

As for the Berserker, head down the winding path, away from the Mystic Gateway. When you get as far as you can go, look left to find an open area with the Berserker Gravestone (pictured above).

Given that Skjothendi the Unerring is unavailable until the post-game, it shouldn’t be a surprise that this is one of the toughest Berserkers, especially on higher difficulties.

It’s imperative to learn the timings of the usual unblockable aerial jump, and Skjothendi also has a devastating attack where they hover in the air before unleashing an unblockable Bifrost explosion. Strike Skjothendi in the air to interrupt this one, or instruct Freya to use one of her skills as soon as you see it winding up.

Defeat Skjothendi to obtain the Berserker Gauntlets and get one step closer to ridding the Nine Realms of these malevolent spirits.

What other new Mystic Gateways are there?

Along with the new Mystic Gateway to the Mist Fields, the pouch of Yggdrasil Seeds from Ratatoskr will open up the following new locations, which are unlocked in the same way as the Mist Fields:

  • Angrboda’s Treehouse in Jotunheim
  • Sverd Sands in Svartalfheim
  • The Abandoned Village in Vanaheim
  • Sanctuary Grove in Midgard

Some of these are fairly unimportant, allowing you only to return more efficiently to places that are already available. This is with the exception of Angrboda’s Treehouse and Sanctuary Grove, which could not be previously accessed by Kratos and unlock some new dialogue as well as a couple more flowers for the Nine Realms in Bloom Favor.

What else is in Niflheim?

BEWARE: SPOILERS BELOW – do not proceed unless you have completed the main quest.

Another key post-game objective will also appear in Niflheim, namely the Broken Prison quest.

However, this can only be accessed by visiting the Raven Tree in Niflheim rather than the Mist Fields. Nonetheless, it’s definitely an interesting objective you should complete after beating the game.

When you have emerged out of the Raven Tree Mystic Gate, head for the ravens and you’ll notice a new path towards the left (pictured above). Kratos can jump across to find a prison, triggering some dialogue and the Broken Prison Favor.

The quest involves a few enemies but mostly this is a puzzle section that entails some careful thinking and several Draupnir Spears. You must use the chain to raise and lower the levels in the right order for Kratos to swing across and gradually unlock more of the prison.

Make your way down and open the door at the bottom, which will reveal the real Tyr. Once you have freed the real Tyr from the prison, he will actually start showing up in all of the other realms where you can find him and interact with him at certain locations.
