Genshin Impact – How to lower and raise World Level
Your Genshin Impact World Level determines the strength of the enemies in the world. The higher the World Level, the more of a challenge you will encounter.
If you wish to unlock as much of Genshin Impact’s content as possible, it’s unavoidable that your World Level will keep climbing up as you increase Adventure Rank. However, Genshin Impact eventually gives you the option of reducing it back down, which comes with its own pros and cons.

What does lowering your Genshin Impact World Level do?
Lowering your World Level will cause a significant reduction to the level of enemies and bosses within your Genshin Impact world. Generally, levels of enemies and bosses will reduce by around 10-11 levels on average.
To give an example, World Level 5 has an average enemy level of around 63, but World Level 4 has an average level of approximately 52. This is the same story with bosses, where World Level 5’s average boss is level 72 but World Level 4 has the average at level 62.
The downside of lowering World Level is that these enemies and bosses will now drop fewer items. In particular, 5-star Artifacts and Materials will be much easier to gather at higher World Levels where bosses will start to drop them. Ley Line Blossoms will also yield better rewards at higher World Levels.
Co-op is also be affected by World Level. A Co-Op world can only be visited if the World Level is equal or below the player’s own world. Therefore, if you are intending to play co-op with a friend, be mindful that altering World Levels may lock you out of their world if will bring your World Level below theirs.
On the other hand, lowering your World Level may actually enable a lower-leveled player to join you in your world.
How to lower World Level in Genshin Impact
You can only lower your World Level once you have reached World Level 5. To unlock World Level 5, you must reach Adventure Rank 40 which is increased by a wide variety of things like completing quests, daily commissions, investigation objectives and opening chests. Along the way, you will also need to complete Ascension Quest 1 and Ascension Quest 2, which unlock World Levels 2 and 4 respectively.
Once you have reached World Level 5, Genshin Impact will alert you to the possibility of lowering your World Level. You can only lower your World Level by 1. Once you’re at World Level 5, the lowest you will ever be able to reduce it will be to World Level 4.
Lower your Genshin Impact World Level by following these steps:
- Open the Paimon Menu
- Select the ‘i’ icon next to World Level (just above the birthday)
- Select ‘Lower World Level’ and ‘Confirm Adjustment’
Once your World Level is lowered, it is fixed for 24 hours before it can be manually changed back. After the period of 24 hours, you can bump it back up to the level you were before it was lowered.
How to raise your World Level in Genshin Impact
You can raise your World Level back to what it was before you lowered it. However, you cannot raise your World Level to a level higher than what you have currently unlocked.
For example, if you have reached World Level 7 you will be able to lower it to level 6, but you will not be able to raise it to level 8 until you have satisfied the requirements for World Level 8 to be unlocked.
The only way to actually raise your World Level will be to complete the necessary gameplay conditions. There are currently 8 potential World Levels in Genshin Impact, which will automatically be increased by fulfilling the following requirements for each level:
- World Level 1 – Reach Adventure Rank 20
- World Level 2 – Reach Adventure Rank 25 and clear Ascension Quest 1
- World Level 3 – Reach Adventure Rank 30
- World Level 4 – Reach Adventure Rank 35 and clear Ascension Quest 2
- World Level 5 – Reach Adventure Rank 40
- World Level 6 – Reach Adventure Rank 45 and clear Ascension Quest 3
- World Level 7 – Reach Adventure Rank 50 and clear Ascension Quest 4
- World Level 8 – Reach Adventure Rank 55
As you’ll see, once you hit Adventure Rank 20 you will get a new World Level every time you increase your Adventure Rank by 5. There’s also the occasional Ascension Quest, so if you do not wish to increase your World Level at the time, you can choose not to complete the necessary Ascension Quest.
How to revert World Level back
Your World Level can be reverted in much the same way as it was lowered.
Revert your Genshin Impact World Level with the following steps:
- Open the Paimon Menu
- Select the ‘i’ icon next to World Level
- Select ‘Revert World Level’
Just remember that your World Level will not automatically revert when the 24-hour cooldown period has ended. You will have to manually go back into the menu and do it yourself.
Once the World Level is reverted to the maximum currently unlocked, the enemy strength and corresponding rewards will be back to normal.
What is the best time to lower World Level?
Here are the main situations you may wish to lower your World Level in Genshin Impact:
- To allow a co-op player into your world whose own World Level is one lower than yours
- To level up lower-level characters who will struggle against enemies at your top World Level
- Simply a reduction in challenge, since there is no other difficulty setting to lower the difficulty
It’s best to think of World Level as something along the lines of an Easy mode. It’s inevitable Genshin Impact’s difficulty will climb as you increase Adventure Rank and unlock more of the game, but you can mitigate it once you are at Adventure Level 5.
