Genshin Impact pets are highly sought-after, with many players wishing for an extra friend to join them on their adventure. There are many famous examples of creature companions in the gaming world, and it’s always nice when games include an animal who can share the experience.

It is indeed possible to get a pet in Genshin Impact, but certain types are not always obtainable and you may need to wait a significant period of time before they’re back. However, it is possible to get a pet without an event, and there are also other animals in the world who may offer a little companionship in the meantime.

Here’s how to get a pet in Genshin Impact, with additional information about other Genshin Impact pets within Teyvat.

How to get a Seelie pet in Genshin Impact

The most well-known pet in Genshin Impact is arguably the Mini-Seelie pet. A Seelie pet can be obtained from limited-time Lost Riches events. During these events, you will be tasked with finding treasure chests in a certain number of areas.

The conditions to unlock the treasure chest locations change during each event, but it generally involves a series of areas being gradually unlocked throughout the time of the event. You must hunt for the chests and eventually clear the final area to unlock the Event Shop, where you can redeem a Mini Seelie pet from a choice of different colours.

There have been five types of Seelie pet – namely the Rose, Moss, Viola, Dayflower and Curcuma versions. These all have slightly different appearances, and you can only pick one during the event. Once you have picked a Mini Seelie, you can equip it as a gadget, where it will float alongside you near above your shoulder.

The Mini Seelie is a purely cosmetic pet and does not provide any tangible gameplay benefits. Though it is equipped as a gadget, it doesn’t actually stop you from using other gadgets that have gameplay functions.

Can you get a Seelie if you missed the Lost Riches event?

Unfortunately, if you missed the events then there is no other way to get the Seelie pet. You will simply have to wait for the next event.

This might be quite a wait. To give some context, the first Lost Riches event was in January 2021, the next was in August 21 and the third was in September 2022. These last only a matter of days (the longest was 17 days), giving a limited window to snag a Mini Seelie.

Lost Riches events generally accompany big Genshin Impact game updates, so it is hard to predict when they will occur. It seems there will likely be a sizeable wait in between each event, so keep your eyes out for any Lost Riches announcements in future.

How to get a Genshin Impact pet without an event

Missed the Mini-Seelie and no Lost Riches events on the horizon? No problem – there’s one pet that can be obtained from a World Quest that does not rely on limited-time events.

This pet is the Jinni in a Bottle – Liloupar pet, which was added on January 18 2023 in the Version 3.4 update. The Liloupar performs in exactly the same way as a Seelie, floating above your character as you run around but unlike the Mini-Seelie, Liloupar actually does have some gameplay benefits as well.

To obtain the Jinni in a Bottle, you must complete the World Quest called “The Temple Where Sand Flows Like Tears”. To unlock and complete this quest, follow these instructions:

  • Complete all four quests of the Golden Slumber questline in Great Red Sand, Sumeru
  • Find the first Dirge of Bilqis quest “Wisdom Has Built Her House, She Has Hewn Out Her Seven Pillars” by speaking to Katheryne from the Sumeru Adventure Guild
  • Complete this quest and journey to the Temples Forsaken in Sumeru to start “The Temple Where Sand Flows Like Tears” quest
  • After completing this quest, the Jinni in a Bottle – Liloupar pet will follow you on your adventure

The Liloupar pet starts with the ability to increase visibility within sandstorms, and as you power them up they also learn Jinnie’s Might, which can dispel Atmospheric Vortexes. Ultimately, your pet can be increased as high as level 7 where these abilities are significantly powered up, and you can also detect Jinn Shrines and control sandstorms with Jinn Branches.

It’s definitely worth obtaining the Jinni in a Bottle – Liloupar pet for any exploration in the Sumeru Desert.

Other pets from limited- time events

The Mini-Seelie isn’t the only pet obtainable from Genshin Impact events. There have also been these pets in various events:

  • Shiki Koshou from the Labyrinth Warriors Event
  • Endora from the Wishful Drops Event

However, unlike the Lost Riches events, these do not seem to be recurring so may not be a viable option for people pursuing a pet.

genshin impact dogs

Can you get a pet dog in Genshin Impact?

You can’t exactly get a pet dog who will join you on your adventure, but you actually can get stray dogs to follow you around. OK, they don’t count as pets, but it’s better than nothing.

When you see a stray dog, run around them for a while and eventually they should get up and start running after you. This might not happen immediately but the dogs will generally become interested before long.

They will continue to chase you for a bit, but unfortunately the dogs will only follow you whilst you are within a certain radius. As soon as you leave the prescribed area for that dog, they will stop pursuing you and go back.

These dogs don’t do anything in particular, but it’s always nice to have a canine companion, even if it’s just for a little while.

neko cat

Can you get a pet cat in Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact also has an abundance of cats, who show up in many locations. Like the dogs, you cannot claim any cat as a pet but they will interact with the player a little.

Cats are less interactive than the dogs, but will sometimes react to you by coming towards you before stretching and laying out. However, they will not pursue players continuously like the dogs.

On the subject of cats, there is a hidden Achievement called A Cat’s Gift, which involves feeding cats around Asase Shrine. You’ll meet a cat called Neko, who is the self-proclaimed “Provisional Head Preistess of the Asase Shrine.

After feeding a cat Delicious Invigourating Kitty Meals over the course of multiple days (where it changes locations on the paw-shaped islands), you’ll eventually be rewarded with the Achievement and a Precious Chest.

Again, it’s hardly the same as obtaining a pet but this Achievement might provide a welcome feline fix for a while.

Can you pet the dogs and other animals in Genshin Impact?

Unfortunately, there is currently no way to pet the animals in Genshin Impact.

This is always a disappointing one for animal lovers, and tends to be a hot-button issue for any game featuring animals.

Surely this feature will be added in future updates of Genshin Impact.
