Genshin Impact - How to beat Raiden Shogun (first fight)

Raiden Shogun is as formidable as she is stylish. She may be one of the most popular characters in the entire game, but she can also induce rage for many players when she is encountered during the Baal boss fight.

After a cool cut-scene where the Traveler leaps in to save Thoma, Raiden Shogun will step forward and showcase her immense strength. What follows is a boss fight that can easily take players by surprise, often representing a significant difficulty curve.

With the right approach, you can get through the battle. Here’s how to beat the Raiden Shogun first fight in Genshin Impact.

Can you beat Raiden Shogun in the first fight?

It is not actually possible to win this fight. To get through the Raiden Shogun first boss battle, you must to cause Raiden Shogun to activate her Vision Hunt Decree, and then survive for a while afterwards until a cut-scene of her Divine Punishment will mark the end of the battle.

There are two ways to cause Raiden Shogun to activate Vision Hunt Decree:

Reduce around 25% of Raiden Shogun’s health bar

Get three of your characters KO’d

It is much easier to simply let three of your characters get defeated. This way, you don’t need to do any damage to Raiden Shogun at all. Your final character can then focus on avoiding her attacks until the cutscene triggers.

Regardless of which method is used to prompt Vision Hunt Decree, you will still have to evade her for about 45 seconds before Raiden Shogun will administer Divine Punishment and end the fight. During this time, you will not be able to use Elemental Skills unless you are using Traveler.

How to beat Raiden Shogun first fight in Genshin Impact

Like we said, you can’t technically beat her, but these are our top tips for surviving the battle.

Keep moving and keep your distance

Raiden Shogun is a difficult foe to avoid, as she can teleport around the arena and reach you quickly. Her melee attacks will often follow up with wide AOE strikes, and she can also attack from range.

The key is to simply keep moving, and try to ensure the camera has always got her in sights. When she zaps close to you, dash away and get distance between you as quickly as possible. You will need to conserve stamina a little, so try save your dodges for the moments she teleports next to you.

Counter her when she has finished attacking (optional)

If you are brave and want to attempt whittling down 25% of her health, you should choose your moments carefully. In particular, when her attack animations have finished there are some small opportunities to get close and deal some counter damage. You should never get greedy with these because she will always hit back hard before long.

The general pattern should still be to stay as far away from her as possible, and dodging away a couple of times when she gets close. After several attacks, she will have brief periods where she will stand still and be vulnerable to attack. These are your only real chances to deal damage, but they never last long so it can still take quite a long time to bring her health down.

Destroy one of the orbs that appear

One of Raiden Shogun’s most deadly attacks will be to summon three orbs that will explode shortly afterwards, dealing massive damage to a wide area (pictured above).

The way to avoid this attack is to destroy one of the orbs. You will not have enough time to take out all three, so just focus on the nearest one.

When it is destroyed, the purple attack indicator for this orb will vanish, giving a large safe area on the floor. Stay in this area and don’t go anywhere near the other orbs. If you do not destroy one in time, the orbs will basically damage the entire area and deal a huge amount of damage.

Use an Insulation Potion

If you have one, an Insulation Potion can be invaluable. Raiden Shogun is an Electro character and her attacks will therefore be reduced by 25%.

The potion is just as useful whichever method you are employing to trigger Vision Hunt Decree. If you have a solid tank and an Insulation Potion, you should be able to survive the final phase of the battle. In the event you are trying to deal damage, this will give you some leeway when you are struck by her attacks.

An Insulation Potion can be crafted with Butterfly Wings, an Electro Crystal and 100 Mora.

Eat some food

Along with the Insulation Potion, it’s a good idea to bring along some food for the battle.

Having food with health benefits is obvious, but you should also be mindful to buff your stamina. The key to surviving Raiden Shogun is to dodge quickly and often, and it’s easy to find your stamina depleted at a crucial time.

Do not attack after the Vision Hunt Decree

Once you have satisfied one of the requirements above, Raiden Shogun will activate Vision Hunt Decree. A message will appear on the screen to advise that this is in force.

When the Vision Hunt Decree is active, characters cannot use Elemental Skills except for Traveler. After this moment, you will need to simply survive for another 45 seconds and the fight will be over.

It is literally impossible to bring her health below a certain point, so it’s pointless to try dealing any more damage. However, Raiden Shogun is still very dangerous during this brief phase. You should simply revert to keeping your distance and dodging her close range attacks. When you’ve survived long enough, another message will appear on the screen to tell you that the moment of judgment has arrived.

Can you beat the Raiden Shogun first fight with a F2P team?

It’s definitely possible to survive the Raiden Shogun Baal boss fight with a F2P team. The easiest way is to use the 3 KOs method rather than trying to knock down her health, though this is possible as well.

Be sure to stock up on lots of food, plus the Insulation Potion. Noelle is a decent character to use for your survivor, and she should be able to hold out for 45 seconds with the Potion. Geo Traveler is also a solid choice who can also deal some damage from range if you wish.
